Sweetest Day - The True Meaning

This is a little late, but I stumbled upon an article recently that described the true meaning and origin of Sweetest Day. It is not a day about big, flashy gifts. It is a day for doing good deeds and gestures. I thought this made perfect sense once I heard the story. We already have Valentine's Day for giving chocolate and roses to significant others. A day where everyone tries to do a good deed is a very appealing idea.

Eighty seven years ago, a small chocolate shop owner took some of his chocolate to a local orphanage. He proclaimed it "The sweetest day of the year." His sole intention was to put a smile on a child's face by doing a good deed. This act of kindness has been celebrated every year since and still is. In recent years, people have transformed the holiday into Valentine's Day part 2. Not many people know the true meaning of Sweetest Day. We want to do our part to get the information out there.

Next time you hear someone remark negatively about Sweetest Day, let them know the true intent of the day. It is never too early to start planning your good deed for next year's Sweetest Day.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a very important time of year for www.poetrygift.com

Breast cancer hit very close to home several years back. We saw, first hand, how this unforgiving disease can beat a person up. We then saw an even stronger person defeat this disease. We at www.poetrygift.com have stood behind this cause 100%. We want to extend a very special poem to you called "God Heals."

God Heals

Remember when you heard the words -
and your mind went blank - you were in another world
God heals
Remember in your darkest hours -
when all that surrounds you is pain and sorrow
God heals
Remember friends' prayers - your family's encouragement
- glimmers of hope from everyday angels
God heals
Quiet...you can hear Him now -
always there - yet never this close
God heals
It's just another day -
yet everything has changed - and you hear yourself say
God heals
Birds are singing -
the sky is a beautiful blue - flowers are blooming...
God heals
Truths that you knew as a child -
awakened again with new understanding
God heals
Remember when others can't -
that life is a gift - each day to treasure
God Has Healed

(Example of optional closing)
Laura, this poem comes to you with all our love and support
Love, Joe, Maria, and Kenny

The poem "God Heals" was written by one of the owners of PoetryGift.com, a breast cancer survivor who openly and honestly recounts her thoughts and emotions upon learning of her illness as well as living with the day to day reality of it. The recurring message of God's healing power serves as an inspiration to anyone experiencing a crisis in his or her life. The poem's author continues to see each day as a gift and truly believes that "God Has Healed."

All profits from the sale of the Poetry Gift "God Heals" will be donated to the Dr. Richard G. and Carol Caldwell Breast Center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital located in Park Ridge, Illinois in order to help women who have been newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Caldwell Breast Center is a cutting edge leader in the field of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Breast Center provides a multidisciplinary approach of medical and surgical specialists plus state-of-the-art equipment in one convenient place.

The Breast Center was recently renovated and expanded to three times the original space. The Caldwell Breast Center's goal is to provide a definitive diagnosis within one week of service. The additional space will help achieve that goal by bringing together specialists in a variety of disciplines including medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, genetics and social services.

Lutheran General Hospital is part of Advocate Health Care, based in Oakbrook, Illinois, which has been ranked as one of the nation's top health care systems for the past three years.

Grandma & Grandpa

Grandma & Grandpa, you are special.
Your love knows no bounds.
A room takes on a special warmth
whenever you're around.
You think we're cute and talented
and maybe, even wise.
But we know that's because all grandparents
see through loving eyes.
Every day with you is precious.
We're so grateful for the hours.
Of all the grandparents in the world
we're thankful that you're ours.

75th Anniversary - Seventy-fifth Anniversary

Congratulations on your 75th wedding anniversary. A couple that has been together for 75 years most likely isn’t interested in material things. Rather than giving diamond rings or necklaces, a gift of time or companionship may be more appropriate. Something like a weekend getaway, special dinner or simply a day together will be much more appreciated. Another suggestion is a picture collage or a video of significant times in the anniversary couple’s life (family weddings, parties etc.)

  • 75th Traditional Anniversary Gift: DIAMOND
  • Modern Gift: DIAMOND
  • Gemstone: DIAMOND

  • TRADITIONAL & MODERN GIFT: : The traditional and modern gift for the 75th wedding anniversary is a diamond. Diamonds are the most popular stone used in jewelry. Here are some gift suggestions: earrings, watches, necklaces, pendants, rings and cufflinks.

GEMSTONE: Diamonds are the strongest and most durable substances on earth. Diamonds are the most popular choice for engagement rings and have become the symbol of true love. Throughout time, diamonds have been thought to have several powers, such as: protecting against nightmares, phobias, poisons, insanity, witchcraft and demonic possession. Contrary to popular belief, diamonds are not always colorless. They can have shades of pink, green, red, blue, yellow and even black. The most famous diamond in the world is the Hope diamond. The Hope diamond is 45.5 carats and located at the Smithsonian Natural History Institute in Washington D.C.

FLOWER: : While there is not a specific flower associated the 75th wedding anniversary, flowers are always appropriate. Roses, lilies, carnations and violets are some beautiful suggestions, but any flower that your spouse or the anniversary couple likes can be professionally bundled with a ribbon or placed in a vase. A bouquet of 75 flowers will make a spectacular display and can symbolize the magnitude of a 75 year relationship.

We invite you to visit us for your next anniversary and we will give you more great ideas.

    60th Anniversary - Sixtieth Anniversary

With 60 years of marriage behind you, there is very little that you have not seen. This is a great time to sit back and reflect on the time you have spent together, the accomplishments you have achieved and the happiness you have shared with others. Use the suggestions below to help make your 60th wedding anniversary special.

  • 60th Traditional Anniversary Gift: DIAMOND
  • Modern Gift: DIAMOND
  • Gemstone: DIAMOND

  • TRADITIONAL & MODERN GIFT: The traditional and modern gifts for the 60th wedding anniversary are diamonds. Diamond is the most popular stone used in jewelry. Here are some gift suggestions: earrings, watches, necklaces, pendants, rings and cuff links. Diamonds are and always have been a girl’s best friend!

GEMSTONE:Diamonds are the strongest and most durable substances on earth. Diamonds are the most popular choice for engagement rings and have become the symbol of true love. Throughout time, diamonds have been thought to have several powers, such as: protecting against nightmares, phobias, poisons, insanity, witchcraft and demonic possession. FLOWER: While there is not a specific flower associated with the 60th wedding anniversary, flowers are always appropriate for an anniversary. 55th Anniversary - Fifty-fifth Anniversary

While your 55th wedding anniversary may not bring the glitz and glamour of your 50th wedding anniversary, it is no less special. Two people that love each other and stay together for 55 years should be celebrated. Hopefully some of our suggestions can help you make this anniversary extra special for you and your loved one. Cheers!

  • 55th Traditional Anniversary Gift: EMERALD
  • Modern Gift: EMERALD
  • Gemstone: EMERALD

  • TRADITIONAL & MODERN GIFT: The emerald is known for its brilliant green shine. This shine comes from a high content of chromium. Genuine emeralds contain trace amounts of iron, which actually increases the value of the stone. Some of the best emeralds in the world are found in South America, particularly Columbia and Brazil. Ancient Egyptians buried emeralds with mummies. Some of the oldest emeralds in the world were harvested from the infamous “Cleopatra mines”. Emeralds are known to be very tough gems, but they are prone to cracks on the surface, which could devalue the gem. For this reason, before the gems are sold to the public, they are treated with epoxy or oils to fix or prevent any cracks and improve the transparency.

GEMSTONE: Alexandrite is a very rare gemstone names after the Russian tsar Alexander II. It is considered the national stone of Russia because it portrays the same green and red colors of the old Imperial Russia. As stated, it is the rarest of the stones that represent a wedding anniversary. Another unique quality is that it changes color. It can turn anywhere from a bluish-green to shades of red. It is rarely made into jewelry, so if you can get your hands on Alexandrite, it would be a great, symbolic gift for your loved one.

FLOWER: While there is not a specific flower associated the 55th wedding anniversary, flowers are always appropriate. Roses, lilies, carnations, daisies and violets are some beautiful suggestions, but any flower that your spouse likes can be professionally bundled and can be given as a thoughtful gift. Tie a bouquet of 55 flowers with an emerald colored ribbon or place in an emerald colored vase and you have a perfect 55th wedding anniversary gift.

We invite you to visit us for your next anniversary and we will give you more great ideas.

    50th Anniversary - Fiftieth Anniversary

50 years of marriage. This is the milestone that every married couple strives for. We congratulate each and every couple that reaches this milestone. Gold is the precious metal associated with the 50th wedding anniversary. Whether you are the lucky couple celebrating your 50th or you have been invited to a 50th wedding anniversary party, we would like to give you some ideas for commemorating the 50th anniversary.

  • 50th Traditional Anniversary Gift: GOLD
  • Modern Gift: GOLD
  • Gemstone: GOLD
  • Flower: VIOLET

  • TRADITIONAL/MODERN GIFT: Gold is symbolic of the 50th wedding anniversary. The gift ideas are endless, so we want to give you a few to get you started. When you explain the symbolic meaning behind these gifts, your spouse will appreciate them even more. Here are a few ideas to get you started on the right path: Rings, earrings, necklaces, watches, money clips, tie clips are some jewelry ideas. Some other ideas include: Gold hit records, gold clothing, gold nugget or gold flowers.

GEMSTONE: Gold is the most precious substance around. Gold has long been sought after for its brilliant look and its workability. In fact, many say that gold was the reason the western states in America were inhabited so quickly and built up so fast. Gold can be made and molded in an infinite number of ways. Pharaohs embedded gold into their clothes and made head pieces out of gold. These head pieces were a symbol of power. Today gold is often used to make jewelry of all kinds. This is the perfect anniversary to give your spouse gold jewelry.

FLOWER: The violet is the flower that represents the 50th wedding anniversary. The leaves of a violet are heart shaped and purple in color. Violets are known for their beautiful radiant purple color. Some are seasonal and some are annual. A group of violets in a gold colored vase or pot is a perfect way to combine two of the 50th anniversary symbols.

We invite you to visit us for your next anniversary and we will give you more great ideas.

    45th Anniversary - Forty-Fifth Anniversary

You are 5 years away from the big FIVE OH, but 45 years of marriage is nothing to sneeze at. Congratulations to you and your spouse. You were obviously made for each other and your love and devotion should be celebrated. We would like to give you some symbolic gift ideas to show the one you love that you love them more today than the day you met.

  • 45th Traditional Anniversary Gift: SAPPHIRE
  • Modern Gift: SAPPHIRE
  • Gemstone: SAPPHIRE

  • TRADITIONAL/MODERN GIFT: Both traditional and modern gifts for the 45th wedding anniversary are sapphire. As with most stones, sapphires can be incorporated into various sorts of jewelry or vases. Here are a few ideas: ring, pendant, money clip, tie clip, bracelet or cuff links. Some non-jewelry gift ideas are: blue home decor, blue crystal bowl or vase or blue lingerie or clothing.

GEMSTONE: Sapphire is a very hard stone and its history dates back to biblical times. It is thought that the tablets containing the Ten Commandments were made from sapphire. It was also thought that the earth rested on a huge piece of sapphire which in turn reflected the sun and gave the sky its bluish color. Royalty has worn sapphire to symbolize wisdom, holiness, virtue and good fortune. Sapphire was used in Princess Diana’s engagement ring. Used in an engagement ring, sapphire is particularly meaningful because it symbolizes faithfulness and sincerity. It is an alternative to the traditional engagement ring.

FLOWER: There isn’t a particular flower associated with the 45th wedding anniversary. This leaves the decision to you. You could get a bouquet of 45 of your spouse’s favorite flowers and put them in a sapphire colored vase or tie them with a sapphire colored ribbon.

We invite you to visit us for your 50th anniversary and we will give you ideas for your golden anniversary.

    40th Anniversary - Fortieth Anniversary

Wow - Together for 40 years! You have defied the odds and you deserve to celebrate your Ruby Anniversary. Whether you are the lucky couple celebrating your 40th or you have been invited to a 40th wedding anniversary party, we would like to give you some information unique to the 40th wedding anniversary.

  • 40th Traditional Anniversary Gift: RUBY
  • Modern Gift: RUBY
  • Gemstone: RUBY
  • Flower: Nasturtium

  • TRADITIONAL/MODERN GIFT: Not much has changed from traditional to modern gifts on the 40th wedding anniversary. The ruby represents both. Here are several ruby gift ideas: any kind of jewelry - earrings, necklace, ring, bracelet, cuff links and tie clip. If you or your spouse is an art lover, consider art that incorporates rubies. Ruby colored or ruby studded bowls and vases are also great ideas.

GEMSTONE: Rubies are the second hardest gemstone only to a diamond. Rubies can range in color from orange-red to purple-red. The redder a ruby is the more sought after the stone is. As far back as ancient times the ruby has been thought to enable people to predict the future as well as stop bleeding. More recently, rubies were used to make the first laser. Rubies are an alternative to diamonds when it comes to engagement rings. When worn on the left hand, rubies are said to bring good luck.

FLOWER: : The nasturtium is a very interesting flower/plant. Nasturtiums are late bloomers that are usually orange or reddish in color. They are perfect for the fall. The leaves and flowers, when cooked, are used to treat infections, colds, flu and digestive issues. The nasturtium is not a very well known flower, so when your spouse asks what kind of flower it is, you can explain that it is the traditional 40th wedding anniversary flower. He or she will be impressed that you have done your homework.

We invite you to visit us for your next anniversary and we will give you more great ideas.

    35th Anniversary - Thirtyfifth Anniversary

The 35th wedding anniversary is a milestone for married couples - falling between the silver (25 years) and gold (50 years). If you or someone you know has been married for 35 years, the following information may help you choose a meaningful gift.

  • 35th Traditional Anniversary Gift: CORAL
  • Modern Gift: JADE
  • Gemstone: EMERALD

  • TRADITIONAL GIFT: According to ancient history, coral is said to have a magical power to prevent sterility. Coral is mostly comprised of calcium carbonate. Coral has an opaque quality to it and can be found in pink, white, orange, red and black. Angel-skin coral is considered one of the most valuable of all coral. It is found near Japan and used in most fine coral jewelry. The most valuable coral is called blood coral. Found near Italy, blood coral is the most expensive coral in the world. Any coral that contains parts of blood coral is immediately more valuable. Red coral defends against plague and pestilence. It is thought that uncut coral worn around the neck will lose its color if that person is in the presence of another person who is going to die.

MODERN GIFT: Jade is another gift associated with the 35th anniversary and is emerald green in color. The two minerals that mostly comprise jade are jadeite and nephrite. Jadeite is the more sought after and valuable of the two. The best jadeite is found in Myanmar in Asia. Jade can also be found in yellow, pink, purple and black. The most common color is emerald green. In ancient times it was thought that jade protected the kidney, liver, spleen, heart, larynx, thymus and thyroid. Jade was associated with increased body strength and advanced longevity.

GEMSTONE: The emerald is known for its brilliant green shine.

    30th Anniversary - Thirtieth Anniversary

30 years have come and gone but your love still burns brightly. Chances are the kids are all grown up and you might be grandparents. The memories that you have shared are priceless. Show the one you love that you are still madly in love by incorporating some symbolic presents in your anniversary celebration.

  • 30th Traditional Anniversary Gift: PEARL
  • Modern Gift: DIAMOND
  • Gemstone: PEARL
  • Flower: LILY

  • TRADITIONAL GIFT: The traditional gift given for the 30th wedding anniversary is pearl. Some gift ideas are: earrings, necklace, bracelet, cuff links or a religious rosary. It is important to know that pearls are a very sensitive gem. They need to be taken care of and restrung every couple of years. They can be irritated by common things such as makeup and perfume.

MODERN GIFT:A more modern gift for the 30th wedding anniversary is a diamond. Of course diamonds are the most well known and sought after gem. Diamonds are most commonly associated with earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets, cufflinks, etc. As opposed to pearls, diamonds are the hardest most durable gem there is. Unlike pearls, they do not need such meticulous care. They just need to be cleaned and polished periodically.

GEMSTONE:Pearl is the gemstone that represents the 30th wedding anniversary. Pearls are unique to other gems in that they are created inside of certain species. Oysters, mollusks and clams all produce pearls. There are two types of pearls, natural and cultured. A natural pearl is the rarest of pearls. It is formed when an irritant makes its way into one of these species. It then begins to secrete what is commonly known as “mother of pearl” to produce the smooth, final product. A cultured pearl is the more common pearl found in jewelry. A cultured pearl is formed when a human purposely places an irritant in one of the above species with the intent of “growing” a pearl. Pearls have long been a valued commodity and are a perfect gift to give on the 30th wedding anniversary.

FLOWER:Lilies are historically associated with the 30th wedding anniversary. We like the idea of giving a bouquet of lilies along with one of the above gems. Any gift of diamonds or a strand of pearls wrapped around a bouquet of flowers will show your spouse that you've gone the extra mile this 30th anniversary.

We invite you to visit us for your next anniversary and we will give you more great ideas.
